Meet the TNT Volleyball Team Coaches

Director/Coach Barb Clark

Co-Founder of TNT Volleyball in 1995

Currently, Coach Clark is the Chief Operating Officer of TNT Volleyball, Inc. as well as a teacher of semi-private volleyball lessons and Clinics for TNT VBC.

Her extensive coaching background spans 35 years. In addition to coaching several boys and girls TNT Club teams at the same time, her background includes: Most recently, Carthage College JV Women ‘09, ‘10, ‘11; Freshmen A Girls Volleyball Coach at Libertyville HS ’04, ’05, ’06 and ’07; Freshmen A & B Boys Volleyball Coach at Libertyville HS in Spring ’05.

Summer Camp Coach and Co-Director of the Carthage College summer volleyball camps ’05 thru Present; As well as, Head Coach of Varsity Girls and Boys at Deerfield HS ’01-’03 and was named the Pioneer Press “Coach of the Year” 2001.  Head Girls Coach at Lake Zurich HS ’95 & ’96.

Girls Asst. Coach at Stevenson HS ’93 &’94. Boys Freshmen A Volleyball Coach at Glenbrook South HS ’91–’96. Clark has coached volleyball clubs and summer camps in Southern California; Seattle, WA; Michigan and Illinois since 1981.

As a player, Clark earned a scholarship to play for D-I Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (‘79-‘83), and was named All-State setter her junior year. She continued playing, after graduating with a Bachelor’s in Marketing from SIU-C (’84), capturing 2nd team All-American honors at the USA Volleyball Nationals (’93). She received her Secondary Teaching Certificate in 2001 to teach Business, Health and Physical Education.  Also, is USAV IMPACT Certified.

Barb graduated from Waukegan East High School in 1979.

Coach Leanne Ulmer

Co-Founder of TNT Volleyball in 1995

Coach Ulmer begins her 15th year as Carthage College’s head women’s volleyball coach in 2015 (410-118, 14 seasons).  She has a .777 winning percentage through the 2014 season!  She also begins her 14th year as senior woman administrator in the Carthage Athletic Department.

Her teams had an unprecedented conference win streak of 49 conference wins through 2010!! That was 6 years in a row as Conference Champs!!  Their overall record for 2011 was 34-7 & 6-1 in Conference, 1st in CCIW, NCAA Regional Champs, and their first ever trip to the NCAA Final Four!!!

Ulmer picked up her 400th career win in a 3-0 decision over Clarke College on Oct. 25, 2014 at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational…and AGAIN they are back on top of the CCIW!!!!   Another Conference Championship for 2014!!!!!

Ulmer is ranked 1st all-time at Carthage in career wins (410) and 1st in winning percentage (.777).

Ulmer was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) "Volleyball Coach of the Year" for the 7th time in 2014!  Also in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011…as well as American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Midwest Regional “Coach of the Year” in 2006, 2007 and
AGAIN in 2014!!!

A native of San Bernardino, CA, she served as head girl’s volleyball coach at Lincolnshire- Stevenson High School from 1993-2000 (227-75-2, 8 years) and the boy’s volleyball coach from 1997-2000 (99-13, 4 years).  Ulmer had eight-consecutive 20-win seasons in girls’ volleyball and four 30-win campaigns, with three conference championships, five regional titles and two sectional championships. Her 2000 boy’s team finished second in the Illinois High School Association championship after winning league, regional and sectional titles.  

Ulmer has served for four years on the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championship Committee.

Since 1995, she has been the co-director of the TNT Volleyball, Inc. in Buffalo Grove, IL. She helps with the boys teams and coaches our TNT Girls U16’s & U17’s.

Ulmer received her bachelor’s in social relations from California-Riverside in 1979, where she played volleyball, basketball and softball.

Her 1979 volleyball team won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW)  National Championship, and Ulmer was inducted into that school’s athletic hall of fame in 1986.

Following a brief playing career in 1979 with the New York Stars of the Women’s Professional Basketball League, Ulmer returned to California-Riverside in 1981 as an assistant women’s basketball coach before becoming head coach for both girl’s volleyball and girl’s basketball at San Bernardino’s San Gorgonio High School from 1982-84. She also played on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) mini-tour from 1989-91.

Coach Lukasz Janowicz - Boys 18’s

(2007-Present)

Coach Janowicz, originally from Poland, came to USA in 2006, and currently lives in Mundelein.  This is Coach Janowicz’s 9th year with TNT.  He graduated in 2005 from AWF Poznan with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education; Specializing in Volleyball Coaching.  He is also USAV IMPACT certified. At the age of 10, Lukasz started his journey as a volleyball player.  He played in many high league teams as a representative of his Hometown, his State and the University he attended. He also played Beach Volleyball for six years. His professional experience as a coach started in Poland. Lukasz coached FKS Poznan (Club) for 2 years and he worked as an assistant coach for the University level team for one year. He has also played with some of the members of the Polish National Team. Coach Janowicz and his wife, Monika, have a 13 year old son, Timmy. Coach Janowicz now works for ABT Electronics.

Coach Lukasz has had some very good TNT teams the last few years and has gone to National Qualifiers winning a Gold Medal in their division once and also taking a team to Minneapolis Nationals in 2011 where they won the final 5 matches of the tournament. Volleyball is not the only sport Lukasz loves. In his free time, he does kite-surfing and in the winter time snowboarding and skiing!

Coach Margaret Salata - Boys & Girls Assistant

(2012-Present)

Coach Salata is a former TNT player, where she got her start in 8th and 9th grade under Coach Clark. Then she went on to play for Sky High for 3 yrs. She is a Stevenson HS graduate who played varsity volleyball for 3 years!!! She earned a full-ride scholarship to play Division I volleyball at North Carolina State where she played 4 years as a Middle Blocker! Her senior year she was Female Athlete of the Year, team and coach elected MVP, and was ranked in the top 20 of all NCAA D-I schools for Blocks. Another accolade from her senior year was being named First Team ALL-Conference in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She graduated 4 years ago with a Fashion Merchandising Degree.  Coach Salata coached our Boys U16-1 team for 2 seasons (’12 & ’13), our U15’s in 2014 and is back for more!!  She has a passion for this sport and loves teaching the players ALL that she knows! She will assist in coaching our boys teams and our girls teams THIS season, 2015-16!!!   She is USAV IMPACT certified. Coach Salata is working in her field of merchandising now and loves being at the TNT gym to help where she can!!!

Coach Brian Chin - U14’s & U16’s Coach

(2014-Present)

Brian Chin

Coach Chin played for TNT VBC his senior year in HS. He is a graduate of Mundelein HS where he was an outside hitter for four years. He has been assisting Coach Clark for the past couple of years while home on break from college. He spent the past 4 years at DePaul University in Chicago. Brian played Club Volleyball for DePaul and played in Club College Nationals with them for four years!!!  This is Brian’s 2nd year being an official USAV IMPACT certified Coach. He knows a lot about the game and brings many years of experience with him to our gym. Brian is an excellent role model for the boys. We are very lucky to have him at TNT VBC for a 2nd season!!!

Coach Karen Chin

(Present)

Coach Karen played at TNT VBC for 2 years while in high school. She is a graduate of Mundelein HS where she played all 4 years as a setter. She is a recent graduate from Carthage College where she played for Coach Ulmer for 4 years. While at Carthage, Karen earned AVCA Division III First-Team All-America honors for the 2015 season. She was named Second-Team All-America in 2014.Karen ChinKaren currently holds Carthage’s all-time career assists record. In addition, she was named CCIW Player of the Year for the second consecutive year in 2015 and was named tournament MVP for the NCAA Tournament Grand Rapids Regional. She was also nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year. The highlight of her college career was playing in the NCAA Final Four. She graduated from Carthage College majoring in graphic design and minoring in photography. She is USAV IMPACT certified and has previously coached for two years in Wisconsin, while in school. She is excited to return to TNT to share her love and passion of the sport of volleyball.
